Altered States is a real-time camera effects app for iPhone. Layer audio-reactive shaders, mix live video with imported media, and export your creations — all with a Y2K cyberpunk aesthetic.

Tap any effect chip in the bottom panel to add it to your active layer. You can stack up to 5 effects per layer and adjust each effect's parameters using the sliders that appear.
Tap the audio react button (waveform icon) on the left side to enable audio reactivity. Once active, use the Band Mapping panel to assign specific frequency bands (bass, mid, high) to individual effect parameters.
You can also adjust the sensitivity slider to control how strongly the audio drives the effect.
Tap the layer panel on the right side of the screen and use the + button to add a new layer. You can import a photo or video, or use the live camera as a source. Each layer has its own effect chain, opacity, and blend mode.
Tap the record button to capture a video, or use the photo button to save a still frame. Exports save directly to your Camera Roll. Free users receive 3 exports before being prompted to upgrade to Pro.
Pro unlocks unlimited exports, all effects, full-resolution output, and unlimited preset slots. Subscriptions are available monthly or annually and can be managed at any time in the App Store.
Subscriptions are managed through the App Store. Go to Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions on your iPhone to view, change, or cancel at any time. Cancellations take effect at the end of the current billing period.
Open the app and go to Settings → Restore Purchases. Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple ID that was used for the original purchase.
Camera access is required to display your live feed and apply effects. Microphone access is only used for the audio reactivity feature — to analyse frequency data locally on-device and drive effect parameters. No audio is ever recorded or transmitted.
This usually means camera permission has not been granted. Go to Settings → Altered States → Camera and make sure it is set to Allow, then relaunch the app.
Presets are stored locally on your device. Uninstalling the app removes all local data. We recommend using Sign in with Apple to back up and restore your presets across devices in a future update.
If your question isn't answered above, send us an email and we'll respond as soon as we can.
Altered States is designed with privacy in mind. We collect and store as little as possible.
